Taylor Camp Screening
Sponsored by Finding Utopia Film Festival
Castle Theater, 7 pm
In 1969, 13 young mainlanders – refugees from campus riots, war protests and police brutality – fled to Kaua`i. Soon this little tribe of men, women and children were arrested and sentenced to 90 days of hard labor for having no money and no home. Island resident Howard Taylor, brother of actress Elizabeth, bailed out the group and invited them to camp on his vacant oceanfront land, then left them on their own without any restrictions, regulations or supervision. Waves of hippies, surfers and troubled Vietnam vets found their way to this clothing-optional, pot-friendly treehouse village at the end of the North Shore road. In 1977, after condemning the village to make way for a state park, government officials torched their houses, leaving little but ashes and memories of “the best days of our lives.” The film reveals a community that created order without rules, rejecting materialism for the healing power of nature. We come to understand the significance of Taylor Camp’s eight-year existence through interviews made 30 years later when the filmmakers tracked down the campers, their neighbors and the government officials who finally got rid of them. This film contains some nudity and explicit language and may not be suitable for all ages.
