Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources is part of what made Primus one of the most distinctive, innovative bands of the 1990s.

The trio’s alt/punk, avant-garde, psychedelic style, along with vocalist Les Claypool's surreal, fever-dream lyrics, resulted in some of rock’s unlikeliest hits, including "Tommy the Cat," "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver," and "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver."

Primus originally formed in 1984 and recorded their debut album, “Suck on This” in 1989, followed by four studio albums: “Frizzle Fry,” “Sailing the Seas of Cheese,” “Pork Soda,” and “Tales from the Punchbowl.”

In 1996, Primus went on to record the original theme song for the TV show South Park and two more albums, “Brown Album” and “Antipop,” before declaring a hiatus in 2000.

The band released several other albums in the years that followed, including some on Claypool’s own label, Prawn Song Records.

Music journalist, Robert Christgau once remarked, "[Primus is] quite possibly the strangest top-10 band ever, and good for them.”
