“The integration of generations — of choreography, dancers and ancestors — makes a work that bends time: eras fold into one another”

“I felt extremely privileged to be experiencing a truly beautiful and captivating performance.” - Olivia Garelja, Theatreview 2021

Atamira Dance Company are leading international creators of contemporary dance and performance. Based in Aotearoa New Zealand, a remote and wild landscape where indigenous Māori stories are a powerful voice in the arts locally and, increasingly, internationally. As a dance collective, they offer a rich and diverse program guided by high caliber choreographers.

The whakapapa (lineage) of Atamira Dance Company’s illustrious choreographic continuum is represented through this large full-length work inspired by Te  Wheke – The Octopus – a powerful tohu (symbol) for Māori and many Oceanic peoples, appearing in different mythologies.
Collectively created to honour and celebrate their 21st anniversary in 2021, eight dancers and eight choreographic practitioners, journey into the esoteric dimensions of human experience.
Solo and ensemble movement expressions occur within a sleek shape shifting world of floating black silk. Layers of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) emanate through accomplished patterns of video design, mesmeric soundscapes and subtle shimmering garments with reflective lighting enhancing the darkness and light.

Atamira is here to celebrate and share their Māori culture through the arts, and to grow the arts through cultural innovation.
