Aparna Ramaswamy’s workshop will include the history of Bharatanatyam, what makes it different from other Indian forms, and an introduction to the movement style.
Bharatanatyam is a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions. Traditionally, Bharatanatyam has been a solo dance that was performed exclusively by women, and expressed Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism, but also of Vaishnavism and Shaktism.
Aparna Ramaswamy, co-artistic director of Ragamala Dance Company, is known as an insightful choreographer and explosive performer who actively questions and engages the dynamic tension at the intersection of tradition and innovation.
REQUIREMENTS: This is an introduction to dance for ages 14+. Space is limited.
