Additional info on Lāhainā Rising: Award-winning documentary Lāhainā Rising is a searing yet hopeful film created by Maui residents and generational families of Lāhainā, chronicling the devastating August 8, 2023 wildfire that destroyed the historic town in the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. Through firsthand accounts, archival footage, and real-time documentation from inside the fire, the film captures the chaos, loss, and heroic efforts to save lives as more than 13,000 residents were displaced.
Rooted in deep cultural and historical context, Lāhainā Rising explores the systemic forces that left the community vulnerable while honoring the resilience and unity that emerged in the aftermath. Centering local voices and lived experiences, the film is both a powerful reckoning with loss and a moving testament to the enduring spirit of a community fighting to protect its people, history, and future.
