Join us for the latest iteration of ACTIVATIONS: After Hours at the Gallery, featuring an evening of music, chant, dance, and poetry that come to life in and around Schaefer International Gallery.
This program is held in conjunction with the exhibition Ocean of Peace, a group exhibition featuring six artists of Micronesian heritage who integrate the beliefs and practices of their cultures with lived experiences in the Hawaiian Islands to build connections across island chains.

Two spoken word artists will perform live recitations of poetry in the gallery. Exhibiting artist Carol Ann Carl is an emerging Native Pohnpeian writer, scholar, and poet who bridges science, story, and ancestral knowledge through her research and creative writing. Mary Hattori, member of the exhibition’s curatorial team, is a Native Chamoru poet, community organizer, author, public speaker, and philanthropist, whose work focuses on culturally responsive education, leadership development, and Indigenous research methodologies.

Also in the gallery, local elders Harry Smau from Palau and Xavier Fethal from Ulithy Yap will each perform chant and song honoring their cultures. The exhibiting artists of Ocean of Peace will be present throughout the evening, with visitors having the chance to meet each of them. Additional surprises will unfold during the event!
DJ Ramwa will be spinning sets in the Courtyard throughout the night, offering a mix of genres with a strong foundation in R&B, hip-hop, and island reggae. With family roots in the islands of Yap and the Republic of Palau, he aspires to bring visibility to a Micronesian community that is still underrepresented in the local music scene.
Food & beverages will be available for purchase in the Yokouchi Pavilion from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Click HERE for the menu.
