Regarded as a national treasure in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Māori singer/songwriter Maisey Rika’s (Ngati Awa, Te Arawa, NgaiTuhoe, Te Whānau a Apanui) exquisite voice and original songs express her thought-provoking meditations on life and Māori culture. A mix of Māori, folk, acoustic, and soul, her musical palette is vibrant with elements of roots and deep culture. Her original songs have become emotional and cultural touchstones in her native Aotearoa, yet their universal themes and emotions embracing hardship and happiness, sorrow and love, resonate deeply with international audiences. Consistently honored with Māori Music Awards, her stunning voice and fusion of English and Māori (Te Reo) lyrics illuminate her staunch pride in her Māori roots while engaging audiences of all backgrounds.
This singer/songwriter has a powerful, majestic voice that captivates audiences worldwide. Maisey began singing professionally at 13 years old. Her first recordings brought her to national stardom with E Hine, a classic collection of Māori traditional songs, which went double platinum and won “Best Māori Language Album” at the New Zealand Music Awards. Maisey was nominated for “Best Female Vocalist” in 1998 at age 15. She toured as lead vocalist with her traditional Māori song and dance Kapa haka group, performing in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia, before embarking on her solo career.
Since then, Rika has produced five acclaimed original albums, all of which have all reached NZ’s Top 40 Album Chart and received numerous music awards, including 15 Māori Music Awards to date. Her releases include the self-titled E.P. Maisey Rika (2008), then Tohu (2009), followed by Whitiora (2012), Tira (2016).
Her album, Nga Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (2020), fulfilled her vision to create a new resource depicting the ancient and sacred stories of The 9 Stars of Matariki according to Māori. Rika called upon 10 of Aotearoa’s finest music producers to bring each waiata (song) to life. Her waiata (song) Waitī Waitā won the APRA Maioha Award(NZ music awards). Rika was named an Arts Foundation Laureate in 2021.
She made her U.S. debut in March 2011, touring Hawai‘i with Hawaiian Grammy-winner George Kahumoku Jr. to great acclaim and appeals to bring her back; she returned to sold-out shows across the state in 2015 and again in 2018.
