Schaefer International Gallery
Join us for the debut of this new program series, ACTIVATIONS: After Hours at the Gallery. This event features an evening of “activations” unfolding in Schaefer International Gallery with live performance, music, and sound compositions that engage in dialogue with the current exhibition Max Ernst: Surreal Mindscapes & Characters.
The artists performing in the gallery throughout the evening have developed and selected works that relate in conversation to the exhibition of Max Ernst, a key figure in the trajectory of modern art in the 20th century and the movements of Dada and Surrealism. Performances will alternate between dance artist Rachel ‘Ihilani Berman with sound accompaniment by Koans of Silence, and violinist Andrew Wu.
Rachel ‘Ihilani Berman is a Maui-grown dance artist building place-based, site-responsive dance installation. Informed by her love of ‘āina and rigorous training in movement disciplines, she moves as a way of being and learning. Trained on Maui with many exceptional teachers, she went on to study and perform in seminal roles under the guidance of iconic American choreographers including Donald Mckayle, Sarah Michelson, and luciana achugar, among others. Since 2019, Berman has returned to Maui and to her own work, digesting her experience and building her performance language. This is her first self-directed solo work. Her performances will be accompanied by experimental sound compositions by Koans of Silence, comprised of Maui-based artist and tech duo Cudra Clover and Bennet Yashon.
Violinist Andrew Wu brings years of experience performing with many different orchestral and chamber music ensembles throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. He has been a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra since 2004 and held the titled position of Acting Assistant Concertmaster from 2013 – 2016. Wu performs as a substitute orchestral musician with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and as a chamber musician with the Baldwin Ensemble, Chamber Music at the Scarab Club Series, and the Detroit Chamber Music Winds and Strings, and he has also presented numerous educational and community outreach programs. He will perform a selection of Surrealist compositions and other works that evoke the fantastical and absurd juxtapositions of imagery in Ernst’s imagined worlds.
In the adjacent Yokouchi Pavilion & Courtyard, DJ Baby & DJ Aur-Levan will be spinning ambient beats throughout the evening.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase for outside dining and social mingling.
FREE Entry! All ages welcome!
Ticketed reservations required via the MACC Box Office
