Maui Arts & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a call to artists for the Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2021. This statewide juried exhibition has been held as a triennial since 2003,and continues to present the unique diversity of the people of our islands, represented through explorations in portraiture.

The Challenge carries two substantial cash prizes: the Jurors' Choice Award for $15,000, sponsored by Jack and Carolyn Schaefer Gray, and the People’s Choice Award for $5,000, based on the popular vote of gallery visitors!!

The jurors will be:

Carl Jennings, associate professor, arts and humanities, Kapiolani Community College,O'ahu

Codie King, director at Wailoa Center, Hawai'i Island

Jan Sato, art teacher at Baldwin High School, Maui

Entry Update Spring 2020
With the current Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) social distancing, quarantine, and isolation recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), artists may also consider video calls with their sitter through FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, etc. The portrait sitter will be required to confirm their sitting with the artist by signing the artist’s entry form. Entries without this signature will be disqualified.
